A tropical perennial herbaceous plant that grows from underground rhizomes into a false trunk. The false trunk is made up of leaf sheaths. The crown is made up tall elliptic leaves. Flowers occur as a large spike of yellow flowers with large purple red bracts that develop to become bunches of plantain fruit. The fruit is typically larger than the common banana. New suckers grow to replace the the plant which dies after fruiting.
