A deciduous large tree with a rounded crown with spreading branches. Grows fast when well watered. It has a bottle shaped trunk with a wider base. The trunk and horizontal branches have thick, sharp conical thorns. The trunk is green in younger trees. The tree has showy, open, five-petaled, funnel-shaped flowers. Fruit pods are filled with seeds in silky white floss.
