Despite the common name, this is not a true palm but a broadleaf evergreen shrub. Its trunk has a flared, enlarged base which begins as a single stem but will branches with age. The tough, leathery leaves are long and strap-like. up to 1m long and only 3cm wide on larger plants. They have very finely serrated sharp edges. The rosette of leaves sprout from the top of the trunk or ends of the branches, and gracefully cascade down like a green fountain.
