Herbaceous perennial tall and row in upright clumps from heavy, fleshy rhizomes that look  like that of culinary ginger. The rhizomes produce stout arching stems with evergreen leaves.  It has dark green and yellow, lance-shaped leaves up to 2 feet long which grow at intervals along the stems.
