A tall tree with a finely branched crown. The leaves are thin, wispy and long held in whorls, surrounding grey-green needle-like twigs. This makes it resemble a pine tree. The flowers are generally dioecious (male and female flowers on separate plants). The male flowers are tiny inconspicuous spikes at the twig ends. The female flowers are small brownish heads at the ends of brownish twigs.
