Adansonia digitata ★ AFRICAN BAOBAB

The Adansonia digitata, or African baobab, is a deciduous tree, noted for its large, distinctive fruits hanging from long stalks. Baobabs feature massive, water-storing trunks. The tree’s leaves are palmately compound with 5–11 leaflets, transitioning from simple leaves in young trees to compound as they mature. The leaflets may be toothed or smooth and shed during the dry season. Baobab flowers are large, showy, and strongly scented, blooming near dusk with petals that vary in color from white to dark red. The fruit is oval, berry-like, with a hard outer shell encasing kidney-shaped seeds within a dry pulp.
